The Sunny Luna Travelling Oracle – Out today!

© Warren Pleece 2024 Berger Books/ Dark Horse Comics (Design by Richard Bruning)

It’s official! The Sunny Luna Travelling Oracle is on sale from today at all good comic stores, book shops and online, published by the great Berger Books/ Dark Horse Comics.

Being a rip-snorting, page turning, eco-noir, retro sci-fi thriller where books play a pivotal role in the very fabric of the story, how about supporting your local book sellers, shops and stores and badgering them to order you a copy?

Over the next few weeks, I’ll come out of blogging retirement (choke) and dip my toes back into the gorgeous warm waters (?) of social media, to post up sketches, roughs and images from the making of the book, so keep watching this space book lovers …

Incognegro: Renaissance parts 2 and 3

In advance of the imminent release of Incognegro Renaissance issue 4 next week, I thought I’d post some belated process drawings of the covers for issue s 2 and 3, both of which are out now, available from Berger Books/ Dark Horse Comics and in all good comic shops, written by the ever smokin’ Mat Johnson and drawn and greyed up by moi! Follow the links below to see a preview of the interior art from each page-turning episode…

Out today in all good comic stores, the brand new Incognegro Renaissance, a 5 part prequel to the recently reprinted Incognegro graphic novel, once again written by Mat Johnson and drawn by me. It’s also one of the first of four new mini-series to come from Karen Berger’s new Dark Horse Comics imprint, Berger Books.

There’s been a lot of reviews and interviews for both the new series and the original book recently, but here’s a link to the most recent from yesterday’s Comics Beat feature that also includes several preview pages from the story.

I’ll be posting soon about the inspiration for the cover design for Renaissance, but in the meantime, I’ve included a couple of versions of the first cover, from pencils to inks.

The Ballad of Franklin Bonisteel – Free Comic Book Day

As part of this Saturday’s Free Comic Book Day, May 6th, comes this little gem, The Ballad of Franklin Bonisteel, from my old Life Sucks partner, Gabe Soria, drawn by me for Z2 comics. Not only is this a one-off companion piece to Gabe’s new Murder Ballad series, but it also comes with a free download link to an exclusive cover of Leadbelly’s ‘In the Pines’ by the Black Keys front man, Dan Auerbach and Robert Finley. If you like your Noir 70s and quirky, check it out. It’s bloody free!

Part 2 of ‘Get Figgsey!’ Sneak Preview

alby_returnofwhassisface

This Friday sees ‘The Return of Old Whassisface‘, part 2 in the Alby Figgs nail-biting thriller ‘Get Figgsey!’, and as you can see from this sneak preview, it’s not looking good for the Albster, but is everyone’s favourite (?) codger just off his ‘Senior Spesh’ or is there more afoot than JG’s refried ‘Hash-U-Like’? Be sure to tune in Friday.

If you missed part 1, ‘Death in Aisle Three’, catch up here on the AlbyPlayer

Brand new Alby Figgs serial, ‘Get Figgsey!’ out Friday…

alby_deathinaile3

Yes, he’s back! Everyone’s favourite (?!) 70-something human-natterbox, Alby Figgs, in brand new seven part edge-of-your-pants weekly serial, ‘Get Figgsey!’ this Friday at the Alby website. What’s more, this seven part run sees a temporary return to glorious old-school black and white (with a bit of grey on the sidies).

In the first episode, ‘Death in Aisle Three’, Alby brushes up to an unwanted old acquaintance amongst the baked beans and non-perishable goods at his local supermarket. From there, it’s thrills-a-plenty as everything starts to go pear-shaped in true ‘Arry Palmer stylee.

Tune in on Friday!

Doctor Who The Eleventh Doctor #7

Out today 21st January from Titan Comics, issue 7 of the brand new Doctor Who The Eleventh Doctor series, written by Rob Williams and drawn by me. The concluding second part of this two-parter, written by Al Ewing, will follow in a few weeks time. In the meantime, I thought I’d include some of my black and white pre-lettered originals alongside the final coloured versions.

This has been another dream job for me, drawing the Doc, countless spaceships and alternative worlds, not that far removed from my 12 year old self’s ‘job description’ back in the day, with the plus of not having to go to a depressing 1970s school.

I’m currently starting work on another two part story for issues 12 and 13.

New Alby Figgs book from Blank Slate!

alby_book

Look who turned up in the post last week! In my cold, scratched hands, I’m chuffed to say the new Alby Figgs book, graphic novel, illustrated narrative compendium, bumper summertime special (however you like to call your comics these days), will be on sale next month from the brilliant Blank Slate Books. Collecting strips from Alby’s first year (season 1?!) previously aired on the Alby Figgs website, in a new format and with some additional material, it’s a gorgeously produced package aided by that master of sharpie comic book design, Woodrow Phoenix, who’s book jackets always match the sharpness of his dinner jackets.

Regale over Alby classics like Diagnosis, Deaf, Figgsy Pudding, Edwin Druid, the Freudian Gutbuster and many, many more.

Remember, you can catch up with brand new adventures from the Albster online, every first Friday.

More book news to come soon!
